Price and warranty
The Model Y RWD costs $58,900, the Long Range $68,900, and the Performance $89,400, all before on-road costs. That puts the cheapest Model Y $11,910 above the Atto 3 Evo Premium and $16,910 above the Evo Dynamic.
From January 2026, Tesla covers new cars for 5 years with no kilometer limit, and the battery for 8 years or 160,000 km on the RWD and 192,000 km on the Long Range. BYD covers the Atto 3 for 6 years or 150,000 km, and its battery for 8 years or 160,000 km. So, the Model Y has the better vehicle warranty for a high-mileage driver, and the battery cover matches on the entry models.
Range and charging
The Atto 3 Evo Premium is rated at 510 km on the WLTP test, against 466 km for the Model Y RWD. The Model Y Long Range goes further, at 600 km, but it costs $21,910 more than the Evo Premium. RACV measured 14.3 kWh/100 km in mixed driving on its Model Y RWD test.
On DC, the Model Y RWD peaks at 175 kW, against 220 kW for the Atto 3 Evo Premium and 110 kW for the Evo Dynamic. The charging page covers the Atto 3 in detail.
Size and space
The Model Y is 337 mm longer than the Atto 3, at 4,792 mm, with a 170 mm longer wheelbase. Its cargo area holds 938 liters with the rear seats up and 2,022 liters folded, plus an 88-liter front trunk. The Atto 3 Evo Premium holds 490 liters with the seats up, plus a 101-liter front trunk. So, the Model Y has almost twice the rear cargo space.
Safety rating
The new-shape Model Y has a five-star ANCAP rating from 2025, with 91% for adult occupants and 95% for children. The Atto 3 holds a five-star rating from 2022, and CarExpert reports that the Evo carries it, although ANCAP's own page lists only the classic variants.
Reviews
CarExpert rated the Model Y RWD Very Good, calling it "still the electric SUV benchmark" and "a top pick", and it criticized the soulless driving character and pricey options. RACV said the Model Y keeps its "benchmark electric SUV status", and it disliked the screen-based gear selector and the cost of options. The review page covers the Atto 3 reviews.
Verdict
The Atto 3 Evo Premium is the better value. For about $12,000 less than the Model Y RWD, it has 44 km more WLTP range, a higher DC charging peak, and quicker claimed acceleration. The Model Y is the better buy for a family that needs much more cargo space and a bigger cabin, or for a buyer who wants the 600 km of the Long Range.
So, the Model Y is worth its extra cost for space and its newer safety rating, not for range or charging at the RWD level.
