BYD Atto 3 safety and driver assistance
The BYD Atto 3 holds five-star safety ratings from both Euro NCAP and ANCAP, each awarded in 2022. The ratings cover crash protection and the standard safety systems, but Euro NCAP's separate 2024 test of the driver assistance system graded it 'Not Recommended'.
Last reviewed: September 2026
Crash-test ratings
| Euro NCAP (2022) | ANCAP (2022) | |
|---|---|---|
| Overall | 5 stars | 5 stars |
| Adult occupant | 91% | 91% |
| Child occupant | 89% | 84% |
| Vulnerable road users | 69% | 69% |
| Safety assist | 74% | 80% |
The adult occupant and vulnerable road user scores match, while the child occupant and safety assist scores differ between the two reports.
The ANCAP rating covers Australian-supplied Standard Range and Extended Range cars built from 21 November 2022, after BYD changed the number, placement, and use of child restraint anchorages. Cars built before that date remain unrated unless the BYD updates to the center rear and front passenger seats have been applied. The ANCAP rating expires in December 2028.
Airbags
Carsales lists seven airbags on every Australian Atto 3. ANCAP names them as dual frontal, side chest, and side curtain airbags, plus a front center airbag that protects front occupants in a side impact. Euro NCAP's list also includes pelvis protection in the front side airbags.
Standard safety systems
ANCAP tested these systems on the Atto 3:
- AEB (autonomous emergency braking) for car-to-car, vulnerable road user, junction, and reversing scenarios
- Lane keep assist and lane departure warning
- Emergency lane keeping
- Speed sign recognition
The 2026 Atto 3 Evo, sold in Australia from September 2026, adds to that list: BYD Australia names adaptive cruise control, blind spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert with braking, and 360-degree cameras. CarExpert lists front, front-side, front-center, and curtain airbags.
CarExpert reports that the 2026 Evo carries the 2022 five-star rating, with the same 91, 84, 69, and 80% scores. However, ANCAP's own rating page still lists only the Standard Range and Extended Range variants, so the Evo has no ANCAP entry of its own. The Evo also adds child presence detection, and the Evo Premium adds front cross-traffic assist.
Driver assistance grading
Euro NCAP's Assisted Driving grading tests how well the driver assistance systems support the driver, separately from the crash rating. The 2024 Atto 3 received 'Not Recommended', the lowest grade, for these reasons:
- Temporary and conditional speed limits were treated as if they were the main limit.
- The car did not adapt its speed for bends or junctions.
- When the driver stopped responding, lane centering switched off but adaptive cruise stayed on.
- No lane change assist was fitted.
- A blocked camera or radar triggered a warning but did not switch the system off.
The grading does not change the five-star crash rating.
On a test drive
- Drive at night to check camera clarity and how the warnings behave.
- Check whether the assist settings reset after each restart.
- On a used car, ask which software updates and recall work have been completed.
