BYD Atto 3 review roundup
This page is a roundup of published BYD Atto 3 reviews, not a first-hand test, because this site has not driven the car. Australian reviewers rate the Atto 3 as a comfortable, well-equipped first electric car. Their main criticisms are the quirky interior, the driver assistance, and real-world range of about 370 to 380 km against the 420 km WLTP figure.

What reviewers liked
Value and equipment. CarExpert called the 2022 car "outstanding value-for-money", and its 2024 review described it as "loaded with standard equipment". EV Central pointed to the Premium's price of $44,990 before on-road costs, after BYD's 2025 price cut.
Comfort and refinement. CarExpert's launch review praised the "excellent refinement" and described the drive as smooth and comfortable. Both CarExpert and EV Central also found the cabin spacious for a compact SUV.
An easy first electric car. CarExpert's 2024 review said the Atto 3 "could be the perfect 'first EV'", and EV Central called it "an easy car to live with". So, the reviewers agree on who the car suits: a buyer who wants a simple, well-equipped first EV.
What reviewers criticized
- Handling and tires on early cars: CarExpert's 2022 review found vague steering, body movement in corners, and wheelspin on the original Atlas Batman tires.
- Interior design: CarExpert described the interior as "a bit quirky", and EV Central said the touchscreen takes time to learn.
- Real-world range: CarExpert measured 16.8 kWh/100 km and was on track for about 380 km, while EV Central expected about 370 km. Both are below the 420 km WLTP figure.
- Performance: EV Central found the performance modest by electric car standards.
- Driver assistance: Euro NCAP graded the 2024 Atto 3's driver assistance 'Not Recommended', its lowest grade.
- Warranty: CarExpert's 2025 version of its review noted that the warranty has "lots of caveats".
Most of these points are about character rather than faults. The documented faults and the 2022 recall are covered on the common issues page.
What changed after the 2024 update
The 2024 update answered the biggest early complaint. BYD replaced the Atlas Batman tires with Continental tires, which both CarExpert and EV Central rated much better, and EV Central noted the gain in wet-weather grip. The larger 15.6-inch screen also made the touchscreen easier to use, according to EV Central.
The criticisms that remained after 2024 are the interior design, the driver assistance, and the gap between real-world and WLTP range.
The 2026 Evo
CarExpert drove the rear-wheel-drive Evo at its European launch in Madrid in March 2026. It praised the jump from 150 kW to 230 kW, the 220 kW DC charging, and the extra cargo space. It criticized the infotainment, the steering feel, and the largely unchanged exterior. No Australian review of either local Evo variant was found when this page was checked.
Verdict
The published reviews support one clear conclusion. The Atto 3 is a good car for a buyer who wants a comfortable, well-equipped first electric SUV. It is a weaker choice for a buyer who wants sharp handling, a driver assistance system that stays out of the way, or a car that matches its WLTP range.
So, by the reviews, the Atto 3 is a good first EV rather than an enthusiast's car. The Evo Premium may change that on range and charging, but no Australian review has tested it yet.
