BYD Atto 3 ownership costs

BYD Atto 3 ownership costs come mostly from electricity, servicing, tires, and insurance, because an electric car has no oil changes or fuel bills. In Australia, servicing is due every 12 months or 20,000 km, and a minor service costs $165 under BYD's capped-price program. The figures below are Australian unless another market is named.

Energy use

The 2026 Atto 3 Evo Dynamic uses 16.0 kWh/100 km on the WLTP test, and the Evo Premium uses 16.4 kWh/100 km. WLTP is the official lab cycle, so real use rises with highway speed, heating, and cooling. Energy cost follows the tariff: charging at home on an off-peak rate costs less per kilometer than most public DC charging. The charging page covers home and public options.

Service schedule

The Atto 3 is serviced every 12 months or 20,000 km, whichever comes first. The launch schedule also included a free first check at 3 months or 5,000 km. At each service, the Evo owner's handbooks list checks of the brakes, suspension, tires, high-voltage parts, and software updates. Three fluids are replaced on longer cycles:

  • Brake fluid: every 24 months or 40,000 km.
  • Transmission gear oil: first at 24 months or 40,000 km, then every 24 months or 48,000 km.
  • Drive motor coolant: every 4 years or 100,000 km.

The handbooks note that earlier cars may follow an earlier maintenance policy, so a BYD dealer confirms the schedule for a specific car.

Service cost

BYD Australia runs a capped-price program through its dealers, with a minor service at $165 and a major service at $498 as of July 2026, or about $341 a year on average. Those prices apply to the Atto 3 sold before the Evo, and BYD had not published capped prices for the Evo Dynamic and Evo Premium as of 21 August 2026. Keep a full service record, because it supports any later warranty claim.

Warranty

BYD covers the Atto 3 for 6 years or 150,000 km. The high-voltage battery is covered for 8 years or 160,000 km, and the warranty promises at least 70% of its capacity over that time. The drive unit, which includes the motor and motor controller, has 8 years or 160,000 km of cover.

For a used car, ask for the warranty start date so that the remaining cover is clear.

12V battery

The small 12V battery powers the car's electronics and wakes the high-voltage system. Owners of 2022 to 2024 cars report finding the car unresponsive and needing a jump start. No Australian recall covers this fault. Ask for the 12V battery to be tested at each service, and note its replacement date on a used car. The battery page covers the 12V battery in more detail.

Tyres

Early Australian cars were delivered on Atlas Batman tires, which are rated poorly in the wet. Cars from 2024 onward use Continental EcoContact 6Q tires. On an early car, budget for replacement tires.

Owner's manual

BYD Australia publishes the owner's handbooks as PDFs. Its site hosts the 2022 handbook for the classic Atto 3 and separate handbooks for the Evo Dynamic and the Evo Premium. The Evo handbooks include the maintenance schedule above.

Insurance and resale

Insurance premiums depend on the exact variant, the driver, and the postcode, so quote the specific car rather than the model. Resale values move month to month. The Australian price page lists Carsales indicative values for used cars by model year.
