BYD Atto 3 buyer's guide

A BYD Atto 3 buyer's guide starts with which car to buy, because there are now four ways into one in Australia. From September 2026, the Evo Dynamic and Evo Premium are the new cars, while runout and demo stock of the older Essential and Premium is still on dealer lots. Used cars from 2022 onward make up the fourth option.

Which Atto 3 to buy

Evo Dynamic. The Dynamic costs $41,990 before on-road costs and has a 60.48 kWh battery with 420 km of WLTP range. It charges at up to 7 kW on AC and 110 kW on DC, and it drives the front wheels.

Evo Premium. The Premium costs $46,990 and has a 74.88 kWh battery with 510 km of WLTP range. It charges at up to 11 kW on AC and 220 kW on DC, and it drives the rear wheels.

Runout and demo stock. These are new or lightly used cars of the outgoing model, which listed at $39,990 for the Essential and $44,990 for the Premium. A discount can make them the cheapest new Atto 3, but they have less range and slower DC charging than the Evo Premium.

Used. Carsales indicative values in April 2026 ran from $24,200 for a 2022 car to $41,000 for a well-specified 2024 car. A used car saves the most money, but it also carries the known faults of the early cars.

A buyer who drives mostly in town and charges at home does not need the Premium's range or charging speed. For that use, the choice is between a discounted runout car and the Evo Dynamic, and the Dynamic's newer hardware is worth its small premium over a modest discount. For regular long trips, the Premium's extra 90 km and doubled DC rate cut charging stops. So, the Evo Dynamic suits town driving, and the Evo Premium suits long-distance driving. The Australian price page has drive-away figures and runout advice.

Test drive

Drive the car for at least 30 minutes so that seat comfort and software behavior have time to show.

  • Drive on rough city streets and at highway speed to judge ride and noise.
  • Brake gently to a stop to feel the blend from regenerative to friction braking.
  • Check the camera views in low light.
  • Try lane-keeping and adaptive cruise, because owners report over-eager braking and lane-keep fighting the steering.
  • Pair your phone, and watch for wireless CarPlay or Android Auto dropping out.
  • Use the climate controls while driving to see how much needs the touchscreen.

Charging check

Plug the car into an AC charger, and a DC charger if you plan long trips. Confirm the charge port, the app scheduling, and that the charging rate shown matches the variant: 7 kW AC for the Dynamic and 11 kW for the Premium.

Used car checks

The early cars have a documented set of faults, so a used Atto 3 needs more checks than a new one.

  • Ask for a battery state of health (SOH) scan. On a 2023 or 2024 car, a reading below 90% is a red flag.
  • Ask when the 12V battery was last replaced.
  • Check the tire brand. Atlas Batman tires on early cars are rated poorly in the wet; later cars use Continental EcoContact 6Q.
  • Confirm the software version, because over-the-air updates improved the driver assistance systems.
  • On a 2022 car, confirm recall REC-005579 was done. It fixed the center rear child-restraint anchorage and the passenger airbag switch on 703 cars, and cars built before 21 November 2022 are unrated by ANCAP (the Australasian New Car Assessment Program) until the work is complete.
  • Ask for the full service history from a BYD dealer.
  • Check panel fit and paint in good light.

Questions for the seller

  • What battery size and motor power does this exact car have?
  • Which software version is installed, and which updates have been applied?
  • Is a V2L (vehicle-to-load) adapter included?
  • When does each warranty end? The vehicle warranty is 6 years or 150,000 km, and the battery warranty is 8 years or 160,000 km.

Questions about after-sales costs

The contract price is not the whole cost of an Atto 3. Servicing, roadside assistance, and app connectivity all have costs after the free periods end, and several of those prices are not published. So, ask the seller before signing, and get the answers in writing.

Servicing

The Atto 3 is serviced every 12 months or 20,000 km. Gridly, citing BYD's schedule, puts the pre-Evo car's capped prices at $165 for a minor service and $498 for a major one as of July 2026. BYD had not published service prices for the Evo when this page was checked. BYD's warranty handbook also requires detailed service records, and it excludes work done by anyone other than an authorized BYD service center.

  • What does each scheduled service cost for this exact car, and is the price capped?
  • Where is the nearest authorized BYD service center that services the Atto 3?
  • Is a loan car available during servicing or a warranty repair?

The ownership page lists the service schedule, including the brake fluid, gear oil, and coolant changes.

Recurring fees

BYD's roadside assistance lasts 12 months from the car's first registration, and BYD offers a renewal without publishing its price. The BYD app has been free in Australia since 2023, and it runs through a data plan in the car. BYD's Evo brochure includes a 2 GB-a-month data plan for 2 years and free map updates for 3 years. On the classic 2026 car, the data plan comes with the Premium only.

BYD has not published what the data plan costs once the free period ends. Ask:

  • What does roadside assistance cost to renew after the first year?
  • How long is the data plan free, and what does it cost afterward?
  • Which features stop working if the data plan lapses, such as the app's remote climate control?
  • How long are map updates free?
  • Are any features sold as a paid subscription or software upgrade?

In Nepal

Every BYD sold in Nepal now has an Ncell IoT SIM for the BYD app and in-car internet, according to Onlinekhabar. The connectivity offers are time-limited: buyers at the August 2026 NAIMA Mobility Expo got one year of free app connectivity, and Cimex's Care+ campaign gave eligible existing owners six months of free data. Cimex had not published what connectivity costs after those periods when this page was checked, so ask Cimex or the BYD showroom directly before booking. It lists 14 BYD service centers across Nepal, but no service price list.

  • What does BYD app connectivity cost each month or year after the free period?
  • Which features stop working without it?
  • What does each scheduled service cost, and is free servicing included with this booking?
  • What does the extended warranty cover, and what conditions apply?

The Nepal page covers prices and the warranty there.
